How to get from Chetumal to Cancun
There is no scheduled flight between Chetumal and Cancun at the moment (a small regional service started in 2024 but no flights are on sale), and flying via Mexico City takes 5–7 hours or more. By car the trip is about 380 km on Highway 307 via Bacalar, Tulum and Playa del Carmen, about 4.5–5 hours. ADO buses run around the clock between the Chetumal and Cancun bus stations, taking about 6 h 20 min to 6 h 45 min, and some go to Cancun Airport. The Tren Maya links Chetumal Aeropuerto station with Cancun Aeropuerto station via Bacalar, Tulum and Playa del Carmen.
Arriving at Cancun Airport
If you are flying out of Cancun after visiting Chetumal, allow at least 3 hours before an international flight on top of the journey. ADO buses and the Tren Maya both stop at Cancun Airport, or a private transfer can take you from your hotel in Cancun or the Riviera Maya to your terminal.

Chetumal’s airport serves the capital of Quintana Roo, the same state as Cancun. Almost all of its flights go to Mexico City (Aeroméxico, Viva, Volaris and Mexicana), and since 2023 it has been run by the military-owned Grupo Olmeca-Maya-Mexica.
