Why is there a lot of sargassum on the Cancun beaches?
Sargassum is a type of marine seaweed that grows in temperate and tropical waters. Although it is part of the ecosystem, its excessive accumulation creates an environmental problem and negatively impacts tourism and public health. Additionally, sargassum affects beaches by causing cloudiness in the water, and when it decomposes, it emits gases that can induce nausea, eye irritation, and respiratory issues.
However, Cancun is currently breaking the sargassum’s record in the Mexican Caribbean for many factors:
- The Atlantic Oceanic sargassum belt, which extends from Africa to the Caribbean, has intensified due to increases in nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and unusually warm spring temperatures.
- Although there are still relatively clean areas, the arrival has been earlier and more intense, thanks to marine currents that drag it towards our coasts.
What measures are being taken to combat sargassum?
The Benito Juarez government has already taken measures to try to remove sargassum with the launch of a new campaign, “Todos contra el Sargazo”, which is coordinated by the State and Federal Governments.
A massive clean-up day was carried out on June 17th and 18th. Beaches such as Playa Marlin, Playa Chac Mool, and Playa Las Perlas were cleaned with the participation of Ana Paty Peralta, the Municipal President, and more than 300 volunteers, including workers from ZOFEMAT, SEMA, Marina, and local enterprises. Besides human help, sweepers, tractors, backhoe loaders, and dump trucks are also used.
Currently, it has gathered more than 2000 tons of sargassum in Cancun.
Conclusion
Summer 2025 has brought an atypically heavy arrival of sargassum in Cancun, but local authorities have demonstrated a strong commitment. However, some beaches were not affected by the seaweed; therefore, travelers can enjoy the beaches without problems.
Come and enjoy an unforgettable vacation in paradise!
